Reference blade for the full-scale blade tests: BladeMaker Reference Blade IB40-1.5

Work Package 2 - Blade Design

Objective

The core task of WP2 is to design blades with artificial manufacturing induced defects to initiate specific failure modes. To design the artificial defects and investigate the damage initiation and progression, detailed numerical models need to be created. These models will offer the possibility to integrate additional data from the entire blade life cycle from manufacturing to operational data and structural health monitoring.

Description of activities and methods

WP2 will provide the subsequent work packages with models for simulations and detailed manufacturing documentation. Starting from a reference design, two full-scale blades and several small-scale rotor blade specimens will be designed. The blade designs will be specifically made to incorporate and investigate the artificial defects.

For each artificial defect, a separate model for initiation, damage progression and repair will be developed. The artificial defects are then placed on the test blades according to the desired load and accessibility restrictions. WP2 will then produce high fidelity models of the blades for detailed simulations as well as manufacturing procedures for the damage initiation. A reliable prediction of the damage growth is crucial for the blade tests to prevent a premature failure of the blade.

The initial blade model will be updated to include manufacturing deviations and defects as well as progressive damage modelling tools in this task. Together with the data collected during manufacturing and the fatigue tests, the numerical models will be further refined and integrated into the digitalization platform developed in WP1.
